Abstract
As is his wont (Scott, 1980, 1984, 1986a, b), Oliver Scott has again put a cat among the pigeons, this time in questioning the usefulness of the linear-quadratic (LQ) isoeffect equation in clinical radiotherapy (Scott, 1987). For the pigeons, I think the linear-quadratic model is very useful indeed, and certainly better than any earlier isoeffect equation (Ellis, 1968) but, on the feline side, I agree with Dr Scott's implication that it is potentially dangerous if its limitations are not continually, even continuously, recognized (Withers et al, 1983). I shall now attempt to answer his specific questions.
