Abstract
Highly refined petroleum oils, containing no aromatics, and oxidized oils prepd. from the neutral stocks, were used in phytotoxicity studies on bean leaves. Visual injury to bean leaves was best correlated with acidity of the oxidized oils. Neutral, non-peroxidic oils had only a small effect on absorption of O2 by the leaf fragments. The effects of oxidized oils on O2 uptake measured immediately after application of the oil can be approx. expressed by the equation Y = 4.66 X1 + 0.13 X2 + 10.8, where Y is the percentage reduction in O2 absorption, X1 is the acidity of the applied oil expressed in milliequivalents per kg., and X2 is the peroxide concn. of the oil, also expressed as milliequivalents per kg. of oil. A highly oxidized oil had no effect on the in vitro activity of the cytochrome oxidase system of bean leaf brei.
