Abstract
Problems considered are: 1) Systems of mating types found when many clones of diverse origin are studied. 2) The implication which these systems have for evolution within these organisms. 3) The relation of mating type to sex and other phenomena in higher organisms. 4) Manner in which mating types are inherited. 5) The conditions under which diversity of mating type brings about conjugation. Theoretical considerations in postulating a hypothetical mechanism by which mating type brings about conjugation are discussed. The reactions leading to conjugation can be broken down into 3 major steps: the formation of substances responsible for sticking together, the sticking together of the animals, and the series of changes in position that lead to final conjugation.
