The Water-Retaining Power of the Soil

Abstract
A method is described of exposing filter paper saturated with sugar solution of known concentration and moist soil in the same closed air chamber of limited size. The paper is weighed before and after the exposure and from its gain or loss in weight the force by which the water is held in the soil is calculated. By using a series of paper slips saturated with solutions of different concentrations very accurate determinations may be made.
