Achievement Orientations as Prototypes

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prototypical nature of achievement orientations as conceptualized by J Veroff and other theorists. Traits relevant to achievement were rated by 108 subjects who received a description of either a process or impact orientation. Analysis indicated distinct sets of traits characterizing each orientation as well as substantial agreement on the exemplars for each orientation. Moreover, traits associated with a process orientation were more favorable than those associated with an impact orientation.
