Test of the trait-state anxiety distinction using a manipulative, factor-analytic design.

Abstract
Attempted to clarify the nature of the trait-state anxiety distinction by adopting a repeated measures, R-technique factor analysis procedure. 104 college students completed a battery of anxiety measures (e.g., the State Trait Anxiety Inventory) on 2 occasions. On the 2nd occasion, Ss were randomly assigned to either stress or nonstress conditions. Factor analysis resulted in recognizable anxiety dimensions interpretable in terms of the trait-state distinction. Analysis of variance indicates that the stress treatment was successful in altering the level of Ss' self-reported anxiety, and this effect was couched in an overall level difference for occasions. Several methodological and conceptual issues are discussed. (24 ref.) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
