Abstract
The modified Tamm-Dancoff approximation, proposed earlier, is extended to describe the states of both even and odd nuclei having neutrons and protons belonging to well-separated shells, and take into account the mixing between quasiparticle states obtained by limiting the excitations to a total of four quasiparticles. Employing the good set of quasiparticle basis states classified according to the well-known seniority scheme, necessary expressions for the calculation of matrix elements and transition rates are derived for both even and odd nuclei. Keywords
