Abstract
The holotype of Sorex fusco murinus Heuglin, 1865 which is deposited in the Museum fur Naturkunde Stuttgart, is discussed. Reasons are advanced for considering C. fuscomurina as the correct technical name for the widespread African bicolored shrew, of which C. bicolor Bocage, 1889 is a junior synonym. The characters of the species and its known distribution are given, including new records from Nigeria.
