Abstract
Preschool children's (40 boys, 40 girls) responses to varied manipulability of a play object were tested within a free play environment. A length of simple climbing rope was presented to Ss when attached (low manipulability) and unattached (high manipulability). A clear preference was found for rope with high manipulability. Keywords
