Hepatic Silicosis

Abstract
A fatal case of silicosis with hepatic involvement in a 36-year-old woman is presented. Silicotic exposure was produced by repeated inhalation of a commercial cleansing powder at age 10. Fibrosing nodules were present within the liver, and hepatic parenchyma contained silica, as demonstrated with scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. A renal biopsy showed glomerulosclerosis without significant silica. Hyaline granulomas may occur in the liver with advanced silicosis.
