Effect of Hydrocortisone on UDPG-Dehydrogenase

Abstract
UDPG-dehydrogenase activity of rat liver has been determined after hydrocortisone treatment with a method described herein. It has been found that hydrocortisone, given subcutaneously to rats for a period of 5 days, depresses liver UDPG-dehydrogenase activity. These data in addition to others present in the literature suggest that corticosteroid hormones can regulate the biosynthesis of mucopolysaccharides by controlling the formation and therefore the availability of the two precursors of the polysaccharide chain, the uridine derivatives of glucuronic acid and of the aminosugars.
