Use of 6-Chloro-Δ6-Dehydro-17-Acetoxyprogesterone (CAP) in Estrous Cycle Synchronization of Dairy Cattle

Abstract
The reproductive performances of 20 untreated Holstein heifers and 69 Holstein heifers and 3-yr-old cows fed varying levels of the progestational hormone 6-chloro-[DELTA]6-dehydro-17-acetoxyprogesterone (CAP) were compared in a series of cycle synchronization trials. The hormone proved to be extremely potent in inhibiting estrus and ovula-tion. Cycles of heifers fed at a level of 0.02 mg per pound of body weight were synchronized in a period four to six days after hormone withdrawal; cycles of heifers fed 12 mg per day were synchronized in a period six to nine days after hormone withdrawal. Conception rates obtained in these heifers when they were bred artificially at the synchronized estrus compared favorably with the conception rate obtained in untreated control heifers. Subsequent cycles in those animals failing to conceive at the synchronized estrus were of normal length and fertility appeared normal.
