The Ooaa Duet of the Gibbon (Hylobates lar)

Abstract
Groups of monogamous, territorial gibbon apes (Hylobates spp.) are thought to interact through their loud calls, but there is little evidence that they do. We present evidence from observation of spontaneous calling and from playback experiments that an uncommon type of call bout produced by the lar gibbon (Hylobates lar), the ooaa duet, is highly infectious, triggering other groups to respond in kind.
