Abstract
Viscosities of partially alcoholized polyvinyl acetates were measured at 25°C. using water as solvent. The intrinsic viscosity decreases, whereas the Huggins constant, k′, increases with increasing fraction of nonalcoholized acetate groups in the polymer. A plot of the viscosity of a 4.0% solution against the degree of alcoholysis exhibits a minimum approximately at 87% alcoholysis. The following equation was established, which expresses the intrinsic viscosity of partially alcoholized polyvinyl acetate as a function of the fraction of alcoholized acetate groups, α, and of the molecular weight: It is shown that in partially alcoholized polyvinyl acetate the larger molecules are somewhat more completely alcoholized than the smaller ones. The resulting heterogeneity with respect to the degree of alcoholysis affects the efficiency of fractionation of such a polymer with respect to its chain length. Keywords
