Abstract
Ascocarp development of two species of sooty molds is described. A species of Aithalomyces has the Dothidea type of centrum organization with the pseudoparenchyma of the ascocarp centrum breaking down to produce a locule in which the asci develop. In Metacapnodium juniperi, the developmental pattern is of the Pleospora type, with the pseudoparaphyses growing down from the top and sides of the developing locule.
