Retention of Organic Cations in Ion Exchange Chromatography

Abstract
Retention of phenylalkylammonium ions is determined as a function of the reciprocal of the concentration of exchangeable monovalent cations. Plots of capacity factor vs. the reciprocal of the exchangeable alkali metal ion concentration are linear. Slopes and y-intercepts are interpreted as indicating two sites of solvophobic interaction occurring in addition to electrostatic interaction. The interpretation is further developed with trialkylammonium exchangeable cations.
