Abstract
For the purpose of locating O-antigen (lipopolysaccharide) in the cell wall of Bacteroides convexus, monosaccharide composition of phenol extracted O-antigen, cell wall and its constituent layers, i.e. outer membrane and mucopeptide layer were investigated and compared between them. The cell wall contained glucose, galactose, fucose, rhamnose, xylose, heptose, glucosamin and muramic acid. But 2-keto-3-deoxy octonate was not detected. In constituent monosaccharides of the cell wall, most of glucose located at the mucopeptide layer as a glycogen like polysaccharide and galactose, fucose, rhamnose, xylose and possibly heptose located at the outer membrane. Monosaccharide composition of O-antigen was qualitatively and quantitatively similar to that of the outer membrane. These facts indicate the location of O-antigen at the outer membrane. Keywords
