Methylnitrosourea-Induced Malformations

Abstract
RECENTLY, it has been reported that a certain kind of chemical agent has both teratogenic and carcinogenic effects in experimental animals.1Among others, Druckrey et al2were the first to report that n-alkylnitrosourea has oncogenic action selectively in the brain and the spinal cord. A few years later, Kreybig3reported the teratogenic effect of this particular agent. In an attempt at better understanding of mechanisms of oncogenesis and teratogenesis in the central nervous system, we have studied the effects of methylnitrosourea (MNU) and ethylnitrosourea (ENU) on rat embryos. This paper is a preliminary report on the teratogenic action of MNU. Materials and Methods Rats 30 days old were obtained and maintained in the controlled environment until 60 days of age or older (230 to 300 gm). The room was air-conditioned and maintained at 22 ± 2 C with the lightening controlled. The animals were fed
