Postsplenectomy sepsis syndrome

Abstract
The postsplenectomy sepsis syndrome, rapidly and usually inexorably fatal, can arise not only after splenectomy but also in patients who are congenitally asplenic or have been rendered functionally hyposplenic by disease or therapy. However, many patients at risk are unaware of their asplenic or hyposplenic state. As Dr Brig den emphasizes, identification of these patients has assumed even greater importance since the introduction of an effective vaccine against pneumococcus, the culprit in the majority of cases. He explains why these patients are at risk, how to identify them, and how to prevent them from becoming victims of this fulminant septicemia.
