A Reproducible Method for Caries Evaluation

Abstract
An ammoniated tooth paste (5% dibasic ammoniumphosphate and 3% urea) was tested in a clinical trial. Two groups of 83 boys of 10-14 yrs, carefully selected for dental history, caries incidence, age and lactobacillus count took part in the expt., which lasted 18 mos. Proximal caries in molars and premolars was evaluated with a roentgenographic method descr. previously (1951) leading to a small standard error of observation (0.6%). The results show no effect of the therapeutic agent on caries increment nor on lactobacillus count. The remarkable equality of caries increment stresses the importance of a careful selection of exptl. groups and confirms the reproducibility of the method used.
