Abstract
In this paper an attempt has been made to answer for the forester and the timber user the question embodied in the title. The information available in the literature and in the laboratory records of the Division of Forest Products on the compression wood of Gymnosperms and the tension wood of Angiosperms has been summarized with particular reference to macroscopic appearance, micro-structure, chemical composition and properties. In each case a comparison with normal wood has been made. The occurrence of both these types of reaction wood has been discussed and attention directed to possible factors involved In their formation in the living tree. Keywords
