Abstract
The County Borough of Brighton is a seaside town with a population at the 1971 census of 166,081. This population has fluctuated only slightly. In 1951, the total population was 156,486; in 1961 it was 163,159; in 1966 it was 159,510. Brighton's population contains a large percentage of elderly people; in 1966 there were 25 · 7 per cent of the population over the age of 60, and 18 · 8 per cent were over 65 years old, compared with 18 per cent over 60, and 12 per cent over 65 for England and Wales.Keywords
