Abstract
Attention is drawn to regions within the luminous auroral emission observed near the equatorwards boundary to the auroral oval that appear to be forbidden. These dark holes of approximately nightglow intensity in an auroral background of some 1/2 to 1 kR, between λ3450and λ5200 Å, were seen to drift from "west" to "east" parallel to the L contour with speeds of around 2.5 km s−1.Keywords
