Effect of acute and chronic acidaemia and associated hypoxia on the pulmonary circulation of patients with chronic bronchitis

Abstract
It has been suggested that the increased hydrogen ion concentration in chronic bronchitis is a significant factor in the pulmonary hypertension of this condition. In this study acute increases in hydrogen ion concentration with HCl infusion, and chronic increases with oral ammonium chloride, did not cause pulmonary vasoconstriction in patients with bronchitis and thus did not support this hypothesis.
