Abstract
Urinary d-xylose excretion was measured in 25 patients with generalized cutaneous disease and in 15 patients with gluten-sensitive enteropathy. As expected, low values were obtained in all the patients with gluten-sensitive enteropathy. In addition, low values were observed in 11 of the 25 patients with generalized dermatitis. D-xylose blood levels were normal in two, while in seven creatinine clearance tests were low. Although low d-xylose excretion is generally considered to reflect defective intestinal absorption, in this study the abnormally low values appeared to be secondary to poor renal function. In this study, of the 15 patients with gluten-sensitive enteropathy no cutaneous changes other than mild xerosis were present, while in the 25 patients with generalized dermatitis there was no associated gastrointestinal pathology found. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
