Abstract
Although there is a demonstrable delay in the intestinal absorption of water in adrenalectomized rats and a decreased emptying time of the stomach, these are only minor causes of failure of excretion when water is ingested in large quantities. The greatest portion of the administered water is retained in the extracellular compartment and probably remains unexcreted because of failure of elimination by the kidney. Plasma vol. (as reflected by hematocrit) is slightly decreased under such circumstances. It is suggested that the low plasma vol. is due to leakage of protein through the capillaries.
