PARAPLEGIA RESULTING FROM TUBERCULOSIS OF THE SPINE

Abstract
1. Laminectomy has no place in the treatment of paraplegia associated with tuberculous disease of the spine. Spine fusion is essential. 2. In the patients at Sea View Hospital paraplegia was of serious import. In such cases there was a mortality rate of 56.55 per cent. 3. Of 122 patients mvith this condition, fifty-three survived. No patient survived who d d not have a solid spine fusion. Of the survivors 62.26 per cent. recovered completely, 24.53 per cent. recovered to a considerable extent, and 13.21 per cent. showed no improvement in their paraplegia. 4. Circumduction fusion and the advent of streptomycin have remarkably improved the outlook.
