Abstract
We have developed a sensitive method for studying the electronic absorption spectra of molecular ions which undergo predissociation in the excited state. The method is applied to the 4-1 band of the b 4Σg←a 4Πu transition in O2 + and rotational lines of varying width are obtained. The excited predissociating state is unambiguously assigned and refined values for both ground and excited state molecular constants are derived. Analysis of the linewidths suggests that predissociation of the b 4Σg - state probably occurs through coupling with a 4Σg + state. Keywords
