Fly Control Costs on Northern California Poultry Ranches

Abstract
The average cost of fly control for 1 year (1962) on 10 poultry ranches was 7.4[cent]/bird/year. Manure management costs averaged 6.5[cent]/bird/year (range 3.5-13.8[cent]) /bird/year), whereas insecticide costs averaged 1.36[cent]/bird/year (range 0.3-3.6[cent]/bird/year). Overhead costs (depreciation, interest, taxes and insurance on equipment specifically purchased for fly control) were included in the overall cost analyses. Fly control (good, fair, or poor) was good where manure management was conscientiously practiced and fair or poor where manure was removed only occasionally or once yearly. The degree of fly control was not related to cost, but on a per-bird-per-year basis costs were higher on smaller ranches.
