Long-Term Changes in Benthic Populations in Some West European Coastal Areas

Abstract
Both intermittent and continuous sets of observations over decades are available describing changes in benthic populations of various coastal areas in northwest Europe. Continuous observations for periods ranging from 15 to 40 yr are described from the Limfjord in Denmark, from two areas in western Scotland, and from the northeast coast of England. Intermittent observations in the Baltic Sea, the Kattegat, and two areas in the southern North Sea are also considered. The utility of these data in assessing the extent and consequences of natural and cultural environmental change is comparatively assessed and a brief account is given of a recent coordinated attempt to study change in benthic communities over a broad temporal and spatial scale in western Europe.
