Salmonella Pericarditis: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature

Abstract
The case is presented of 5 year-old boy with a 3-week history of rhinorrhea, headache, fever, lethargy, cough, respiratory distress, orthopnea and abdominal pain. Type C Salmonella was grown from cultures of blood, bone marrow and pericardial fluid, and serum agglutination tests were positive. Rapid improvement and apparent recovery resulted from treatment with chloramphenicol, demethylchlortetracy-cline and a short course of prednisone. The present report represents the 8th reported case of nontyphoid Salmonella infection with pericarditis. A brief discussion of the advantage of combined antibiotic and steroid therapy is included.
