Abstract
Aneurysms of the common carotid artery are infrequent, and those of the internal carotid artery are encountered even less often. There have been few reports in the English literature of aneurysms of the internal carotid artery which were treated by excision with restoration of circulation. In 1952 Dimtza excised an aneurysm from the left internal carotid artery and restored arterial continuity by end-to-end suture. Boatman and Bradford excised an aneurysm from the right internal carotid artery and anastomosed the distal end of the external carotid artery to the side of the internal carotid; they employed hypothermia and a vascular shunt. Benvenuto and co-workers described an end-to-side anastomosis between the distal portion of the left internal and the external carotid artery with the patient in a state of hypothermia.
