Abstract
This is a small research project whose aim is to find out to what extent middle managers in education and industry have received training for these posts, and what might be the common principles underlying effective training. Research methods include a review of the literature, questionnaires and semi‐structured and unstructured interviews of training providers and middle managers. The main investigation consists of two samples of middle managers, one from secondary schools and one from business and industry (of 290 and 270 respectively), centred for the most part, but by no means exclusively, in the Midlands. This article, being a report of work in progress, recounts the results of the survey of secondary school teachers. Full statistics will be available in the final report.
