This section is an updated version of the material published in the 1988-1989 Directory of Graduate Medical Education Programs. INTRODUCTION This annual report on graduate medical education in the United States for the 1987-1988 academic year contains data on the number of programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), by specialty and by region, and provides information on some characteristics of the persons in these programs. In 1986, the ACGME accredited, through the Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine, programs in nine subspecialties of internal medicine and, through the Residency Review Committee for Pathology, programs in chemical pathology and medical microbiology. Recently, the special requirements for programs in child neurology, geriatrics, hand surgery, musculoskeletal oncology, orthopedic sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics, and radioisotopic pathology were approved.
