Dielectric relaxation and thermally stimulated current behaviour of pinacol hexahydrate

Abstract
Studies have been made of the dielectric relaxation behaviour of pinacol hexahydrate over a range of frequency, temperature and applied pressure (1 to 1700 atm). The derived activation volumes for the relaxation process were in the range 5.5 to 8 cm3 mol–1. The mechanism for motion is discussed in terms of the diffusion of Bjerrum D and L orientational defects. One TSD current peak was observed near 175 K and analysis suggests that the log τ against (T/K)–1 plot is curved for pinacol hexa-hydrate with Q increasing as the temperature is lowered.
