Abstract
Filtration of a peptic digest of muscle removes a fat-soluble substance essential for the growth of blow-fly larvae (Lucilia sericata) ; addition of muscle oil to the diet restores normal growth. Other sources of the growth factor are, in decreasing order of potency: wool wax, wheat germ oil, egg yolk, cod-liver oil, butter. Olive oil and lard have little or no growth-promoting effect. The active substance occurs in the unsaponifiable residue after hydrolysis and appears to be related to sterol; it is not vit. A, D, or E.This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
