Increase of some Rat Liver Microsomal Enzymes as a Consequence of Prolonged Alcohol Intake: Comparison with the Effect of Phenobarhitone

Abstract
In order to clarify whether ethanol and phenobarbitone have similar or different actions on liver microsomal enzymes the behaviour of aryl hydroxylase, nitrate reductase, microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS), and UDP-glucuronyltransferase was studied in the liver of rats chronically treated with ethanol or phenobarbitone. UDP-glucuronyltransferase, aryl hydroxylase and nitrate reductase showed similar increases in the 2 groups of animals. The MEOS was significantly increased after treatment with ethanol while it was unaffected by phenobarhitone administration.
