Abstract
Sum rules and causality are used to obtain a general relation connecting the dynamic and static properties of any dielectric system which supports polarization waves. The Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation appears as a special limiting case. Inhomogeneous media provide illustrative examples.Keywords
