Abstract
The pictorial quality of equivalent circuits is often of considerable assistance in computing the performance of transformers and that of synchronous and induction machines. The principal object of this paper is to show how equivalent circuits are useful in extending Fortescue's method of symmetrical components to cases where the circuits on both sides of the air gap of either synchronous or induction machines are unsymmetrical. The analysis is developed for steady-state conditions but the method also may be useful in the analysis of transient conditions.
