Workshop on Neurobehavioral Disorders in Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract
More than 85 scientists attended a workshop in Bergamo, Italy, on June 25 through 27,1992, to discuss the diagnosis, underlying disease, natural history, and therapeutic intervention of neurobehavioral disorders in multiple sclerosis (MS). The rationale for the meeting was based on recent scientific progress in the understanding of the cognitive and emotional changes that occur in a substantial number of patients with MS. The emphasis of the meeting was not only to summarize the current state of knowledge in the field, but, more important, to identify understudied areas and to develop new strategies for future studies. The meeting was opened by W. Ian McDonald, MD (London, England), who reminded us that while mental changes have been recognized since the earliest clinical accounts of MS, it is only in the past decade that they have been defined in detail and attempts have been made to relate them to cerebral pathological changes.
