Abstract
Known values of nuclear spins and magnetic moments are used to assign orbital quantum numbers to the last odd particle. A consistent scheme is developed that permits the correlation of a wide variety of nuclear data. An interpretation is obtained of the general trends of nuclear spins, for the particular stability of nuclei containing 20, 50, or 82 neutrons or protons, for the occurrence of isomeric states, and for the allowed or forbidden character of -decays for nuclei with odd mass numbers.
