Abstract
Technical details of floating mussel culture of Mytilus galloprovincialis, first developed to an industrial level in Europe, is described in this paper. A distinctive feature is the growing of naturally seeded spat on floating rafts which are lowered into the sea. Thus the nature of the sea bottom is unimportant High density mussel culture is made possible by the efficient use of the surface layer, where mussels can feed on the abundant naturally occurring plankton and grow rapidly. This general description sets out the main details of new production technology as practiced at Galicia, Spain.
