Abstract
Two successful transfers of ovaries between dogs of different breed were accomplished. The capsule was incised and the ovary removed at the hilus. The donor''s ovary was secured in the capsule of the recipient with catgut sutures and the capsule closed. Ovariectomy and transfer were made on both sides at the same operation. The donors were bloodhounds and the recipients foxhounds. Both were in estrus. Estrus then decreased for 4-5 days, and recurred for a normal 20-day cycle. A 2d estrus occurred in 49 days in one animal and 98 days in the other. This represents a continuation of the donor''s cycle. It suggests that initiation of estrus is a function of the ovary rather than of the pituitary. After 70 days a dog was killed and its ovary showed an excessive number of follicles. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
