Abstract
Ferritin and particles of saccharated iron oxide are ingested and segregated in endothelial cells. The ferritin is taken up in Kupffer cells by coated vesicles but it may also pass directly through the cell membrane. It is segregated in membrane-bounded bodies of varied appearance, but particles are also seen free in the cytoplasm. Ferritin is taken up by endothelium in the adrenal, spleen, aorta, heart, intestine and brain and is often to be found concentrated in multivesicular bodies.
