Abstract
The authors propose a communication method for a nonlinear and dispersive medium such as an optical fiber that is based on eigenvalues of associated equations for the wave amplitude. In optical communications, the communication distance measured by the carrier wavelength reaches the order of 10/sup 11/-10/sup 13/. As a result, dispersive and nonlinear effects, even if small, contribute significantly to the distortion of signal information contained in waveforms or in frequency spectra. Thus, it is desirable to use other parameters which remain unaltered. The eigenvalues of the associated equation for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation which describes the lightwave envelope in fibers constitute such parameters. Soliton-based communication corresponds to the case of one eigenvalue. Keywords
