Abstract
The Knox and Thomson algorithm (see Astrophys. J., vol.193, p.L45, 1974) enables the reconstruction of atmospheric turbulence degraded images. The limitations of this method are described. The uncertainty related to this technique has been calculated by taking into account the noise and turbulence effects. This uncertainty has been evaluated as the r.m.s. value of the reconstructed object Fourier transform phase. The experimental verification has been achieved in an atmospheric turbulence simulation cell with one dimensional images. Different noise levels and turbulence strengths have been considered. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical results. For two dimensional images, the application field of this technique has been theoretically estimated as a function of the minimal photon number per speckle.
