High Energy γ-Ray Detector with Good Resolution

Abstract
A 12.7×12.7 cm cylindrical lead fluoride (PbF2) crystal has been tested as a Čerenkov shower detector of high energy positrons. The behavior is expected to be similar for electrons and γ‐rays of the same energies. The line width (full width at half‐maximum) varied from 32% at 300 MeV to 16% at 900 MeV. A linear relationship between pulse height and energy was observed over the measured range.
