Abstract
40 undergraduate men--20 in the upper and 20 in the lower 4/10 of a distribution of balanced authoritarianism (F) scores--administered sanctions to a mythical follower after each of 15 follower-performance trials. In their attempts to maximize follower performance, Ss could use monetary rewards or penalties, written notes indicating positive or negative evaluations, or no sanction at all. Low-F Ss used negative sanctions (monetary penalty or negatively evaluative note) significantly less often than did high-F Ss, as expected, and used no sanction at all significantly more often than did the highs.
