Abstract
On the basis of 3 cases the author has defined the position with regard to the clinical aspects, histogenesis, and classification of lipomatous nevi and of nevi with vesicular cells. The systematized variety, appearing most often in the gluteal region, should be named from its original description "nevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis Hoffmann- Zurhelle " and only the solitary type without any predilection as to site of localization should be called "nevus lipomatosus". These two forms have nothing in common with melanocytic nevi. These are true hemartomata with late formation of fat cells and in which histiocytic elements can still be shown around the vessels. Lipomatous nevi should not be confused with what were called nevi with vesicular cells. These latter are nevi with nevus cells in which the melanocytes are transformed into vacuolar-fatty cells. Finally the problem presented by the existence of nevus cell nevi undergoing lipomatous transformation is discussed.
