Abstract
Corn earworm (Heliothis zea (Boddie)) damage on Westland, RS610, and Plainsman grain sorghums was evaluated using cages to confine larvae to the heads. One larva per head consumed an average of 166 kernels. Approximately 274, 370, 497, 632, 690, 785, 915, 1,010, 1,068, 1,219, 1,406, and 1,549 kernels were eaten by 2 through 13 larvae, respectively. Percentage losses for the respective levels of infestation, 1 through 13, were 6, 10, 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30, 33, 37, 40, 44, and 48. The equation, Ŷ=71+102X, can be used to predict the number of kernels that "X" larvae will destroy on a head. When the number of kernels on an average head is known, the percentage loss can be calculated and used in making control recommendations and crop-loss estimations. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
